The Duchess of York has told friends she feels “very lucky to be alive” after undergoing a lengthy operation for breast cancer.
Sarah Ferguson, known as Fergie, underwent an eight-hour operation at King Edward VII Hospital in London recently.
She underwent a single mastectomy and breast reconstruction a few days after doctors found the shadow during a routine mammogram.
Friends say Fergie, 63, was doing well and recovering after spending four days in intensive care.
Fergie is believed to need round-the-clock monitoring after the surgery went awry during which friends confirmed the operation was a “success”, The Mirror reports.
She is now recovering at the Royal Lodge in Windsor where she lives with her ex-husband, Prince Andrew.

King Charles is said to have written to his former brother-in-law giving his “sincere wishes for a speedy recovery”.

Friends say Princess Eugenie, who gave birth to her second child in May, has “moved in” to look after her, while Princess Beatrice is “always on the phone”, the report says.

A friend of the duchess said: “The operation took eight hours and was more involved than people thought.
“Today, the message he wants to get out is that he is very thankful and feels that he is lucky to be alive.
“He would like to thank the two surgeons Christine Choy and Stuart James who saved his life and the entire medical team who worked so hard to help him.”
Fergie’s recovery at the Royal Lodge is said to have seen plans for Prince Andrew to leave the mansion “kept quiet” for now.
Apparently the king was behind the move, wanting his younger brother to stay at Frogmore Cottage, eventually vacating the Royal Lodge for the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children.
Although nothing has been confirmed, plans for Prince Andrew to move out of the Royal Lodge are said to be on hold after learning of his ex-wife’s cancer diagnosis, according to UK media.

A spokesperson for Fergie confirmed the safety last week before speaking about her illness on her new podcast.
“It is very important that I speak about this,” he said on Monday last week.
“I’m telling people out there because I want everyone who listens to this podcast to go see it.”
Fergie said she believed the doctors “caught this cancer in time, I pray”.
He said the disease forced him to reevaluate his life
“I’m taking this as a real gift to myself to change my life, to take care of myself. To stop trying to fix everyone else,” he said.
“I’m worth it, be tough, be tough, find out what caused this to come as a shadow. And look at it straight.”
“This amazing place I’m in right now, means there’s nothing to do. I can’t give another reason. I have to do this surgery and I have to be healthy and strong so there’s no better option. .
“It’s important that we wake everyone up to get screened. Not just breast cancer. But prostate — all screenings.”
