With a basket of unexpected items and only 90 minutes to use in two rounds, the contestants had their work cut out for them.
“I thought he was very generous with the ingredients he gave us,” Malissa told 10 drama. “However, for me, it was the time limit. Time in the kitchen is something that goes by very quickly and having only 90 minutes between two races got under my skin.”
In the first episode, Brent decided to use his safety pin which left Malissa, Rhiannon, Declan and Cath to cook, then sent Malissa home.
“I was so happy when I saw Kirsten come in, and she was nervous. I remember the first day of MasterChef, I wanted to do well in desserts, so I went home and enrolled in the Kirsten Tibballs Savor School. Before I went to bed, I would watch one of her lectures, or read her recipes. It was so painful that In the end I returned home because of his problem, but I learned a lot from him.”
Malissa made the Chocolate Parfait with Raspberry Sauce and Almond Crumb in round one, followed by the Hazelnut Ice Cream Sandwich with Chocolate Ganache in round two. Although the judges loved the flavors in each dish, both had a few flaws.
“I enjoyed the dishes I cooked, and I was very proud of them.” There is no way I thought I could pull off two beautiful sets in one challenge. “I made mistakes, but they were very small mistakes,” he said.
“I will always remember that cook and I will remember how hard I worked and how fast I ran.” I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I would be so disappointed when I went home to my cake that I made a few weeks ago, which was not finished. That would be very bad.”
Malissa reflects on her first day in the MasterChef kitchen and realizes how far she’s come as a chef, as well as her confidence.
“No matter how many times I cooked in the kitchen, it was less time for me, every time. I love food, I love to cook and when I put it, I think, what will I lose? I like to challenge myself and, even if I have moments of self-doubt and think that I am not good enough to do something, I always push myself. “
One of her favorite memories was the first time she took salt and pounded it, creating a Honey Panna Cotta that not only saved her from destruction, but the judges loved it.
“I told myself that sweets are not my thing. I’m a foodie, I don’t cook much with spices. But when I cooked the dish, it was very beautiful. “I don’t just like the way it looks, I like the way it tastes,” she said.
“It was one of the most important moments when I discovered a part of cooking that I love. Another one was Jasmine Tea Smoked Chicken because I was using a lot of Asian food, which I didn’t know. The whole process of smoking was something I did that day and that moment proved to me that if I put my mind to it for something, I can achieve it.”
Malissa had “all the knowledge of the MasterChef kitchen”, being named the eliminator by Jock for being in almost every elimination and challenge of the season.
“When you apply to do something like MasterChef, you want to have all the experience. Personally, I never wanted to fly under the radar and because of that, I was fine. I could face any ups and downs and although sometimes it was exhausting, I look back and I’m very grateful.”
Looking ahead to her future, Malissa has a clear idea of how to combine her passion for cooking with her current career as a nutritionist.
“The MasterChef experience gave me this new fire to pursue my dreams. I want to create a beautiful business around food and nutrition, to marry the two. I want to teach people about beautiful food, how to cook it and how it feeds your mind and body. Finding peace with food is something that makes me happy. so much and I can’t wait to tell other people about it.
