A very interesting test by YouTuber Matt Irwin put the Nikon Z8 at its best in terms of 8K recording times for compressed RAW codecs (ProRes RAW and N-RAW). The results are terrifying. See below.
Someone had to look into that. After many problems related to the reduction of 8K RAW recording time due to excessive heat (related to other camera manufacturers, especially Canon), testing the temperature was necessary. Fortunately, Matt Irwin from the YouTube channel Matt Irwin Photography gave it a try (and many other things). First, let’s get the results straight: the Nikon Z8 doesn’t overheat! The camera was tested on shooting 8K compressed raw. We consider N-RAW and ProRes RAW. The results are amazing. See below. Actually, the camera was not heated, and the recording stopped when the card was full. Check out the images below, and the summary table below, which shows recording times:

We all remember the story of the Canon R5. A technical glitch caused the EOS R5 to only record 8K raw for a short period of time, due to an overheated sensor. This allowed users to configure the production solutions to be set to allow for longer recording times (a copper plate, for example). Or, other solutions developed by hardware companies to bypass recording time limitations due to overheating (Tilta’s a dedicated breaths to cool the camera). Finally, it did abolished by Canonand now R5 is more cable 1.5 hours of 8K raw recording time. Additionally, Sony’s mirrorless display, the Alpha 1, they met that concern too. So, kudos to Nikon for breaking that limit for the Z9, and the Z8.
Apart from the good news, it seems that the Z8 is facing some problems. Some of them may be intentional (will be explained later). There is a recall for the Z8 models. As stated (Google translation) by Nikon Japan (not announced by Nikon USA, however): “Customers who use the Z8 mirrorless camera have reported that sometimes the lenses cannot be attached because the lens cannot be surrounded by the locks. position. As a result of this study, it was found that the phenomenon this can happen in “Z 8″. We have identified the number of products that we need Z8 to inform about the correspondence. Regardless of the warranty period, we will repair the affected products free of charge. We will pay the return shipping costs. If you have any questions about this matter, please contact the support organization . We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to our customers”. Additionally, Nikon Rumors is reporting the removal of the Z8’s advanced Auto Capture feature from a YouTube video and press release. The site thinks it’s because the new Z8 is “so much better as a camera and somehow makes the Z9 timeless”. Well, we thought the same (read: Nikon has just killed its flagship). In the article we wrote, the Z8 is defined as the Z9 in a smaller body, and at a much cheaper price. Why should users buy the Z9, if they have everything in the Z8? It was surprising that Nikon allowed the Z8 to shoot 8K raw video with the same codecs as the Z9. Any thoughts on this?
It’s amazing how well the camera industry has tackled 8K’s hottest issues. And it’s amazing how it turned out in the Nikon Z8. It will be interesting to test the Z9 in this case. However, if the Z8 can shoot 8.3K of N-RAW for more than 90 minutes, we can assume that the Z9 can do that too. However, in terms of what has been removed from the Z8 news – Do you think it’s a reason to avoid being eaten by the Z9?
