Today’s Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 arrived on the scene in 2021. The main story of these sports cars was the big 2.4-liter boxer four-cylinder engine developed by Subaru, producing more power compared to the outgoing model. Since then, intermittent reports have come in from owners about engine issues. Now, the owner of the 2022 Subaru BRZ is trying to solve the problem.
The video above this article is posted on Price 900BRZ YouTube video. It starts with a short quote from someone named Brian, who says he owns a 2022 BRZ. In short, he tests his BRZ alongside the 2022 Toyota GR86 on a track, driven by four drivers of varying abilities. The cars were equipped with two oil sensors, connected to a software program to measure real-time engine oil pressure while on the road.

As for the cars, both Toyota and Subaru are said to have GT Radial SX2 road tires and stock suspension with minor changes up front. Engines are also stock, though Jackson Racing oil coolers are known. Both vehicles have OEM oil filters and run Motul 8100 5W30 oil.
The video details the test, but the results showed a drop in fuel in the engine during the right turn. While the pressure is usually around 60 psi in a straight and left turn, that showed a drop below 30 psi when you turn right. At one point, the data shows oil pressure dropping to 20 psi in a Toyota GT86 test car.

The people making this video think that the low power may be due to oil being put in the timing cover and driving hard and not getting back on the car. In addition, the location of the pickup can be the reason why the problem seems to be common during right turns. In the video, Brian says that the lows can be enough to destroy property. Finally, it is believed that the problem is unrelated to concerns about excess RTV silicone in the oil pan, which is thought to be another cause of engine failure in these vehicles.
This is the end of the Subaru BRZ owner survey, but what do the automakers have to say? Motor1.com contacted Toyota and Subaru about the video, asking for comment. A Toyota spokesperson responded and promised to look into the matter. We have not yet received a response from Subaru. We will update this article with more information as it becomes available.
Currently, both Subaru and Toyota advertise the BRZ and GR86 as “tested” or “experimental.” Toyota is offering a one-year official membership in the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) and a free “High Speed Driver Membership” with every GR86 purchase. No automaker reports of fuel-related engine problems have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but there are several owner complaints about the RTV issue.
