The Apple Vision Pro headset has been several years in the making. Now that we’ve seen it and know what to expect when it launches next year, it’s time to look forward to whatever else Apple has planned between now and the end of next year. But thanks to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, we have a pretty good idea of what the company’s upcoming roadmap might entail.
While Apple still needs to bring the Vision Pro to Apple Store shelves, that’s still a few months away. This means that there is work to be done, and while the hardware is partially ready, the software still needs to be fine-tuned. Things like streaming, Viewing and editing Apple apps for iPads are some of the important functions.
Apple has reportedly made a second headphone cable, after testers reported the headset’s weight after a few hours. However the headset may be sold as an optional accessory, rather than bundled with the $3,500 headset.
As for when the headphones will launch, all we have is “early 2024”. Although Gurman says this could last until May, that would conflict with the new M3 Macs – which are rumored to arrive in mid-2024. He feels it would be uncool for the headset to come so close to Macs that are cheaper and include a more powerful chip.
There’s a lot to come from Apple over the next 18 months
While the Vision Pro is (rightly) getting all the attention, there are other Apple products on the way, and we’re not talking about the iPhone 15 model – due to launch this fall.
According to Gurman there will be three models of the Apple Watch that will be launched this year – at the same time as the iPhone 15. These include two models of the Apple Watch series 9 and an updated version of the Ultra. Which is not very surprising, but we had heard some rumors that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 could arrive until 2024. So it’s interesting that Apple’s smart watch can get an annual refresh after all. Maybe the two versions of the Apple Watch 9 are different sizes of the same device, as usual.
Gurman also says three MacBook Pro models are on the way soon, including the 13-inch MacBook Pro M3. So it seems that Apple will not accept that The 15-inch MacBook Air makes that feature unnecessary. Upgraded versions of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, running the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips are also expected, which shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Two Macbook Air models are set to arrive, the upgraded 13-inch and 15-inch models, as well as two 24-inch iMacs. Gurman was told that the 30-inch iMac could also be the first.
Two iPads with OLED displays are also supported, although Gurman doesn’t provide details on what they will offer. Considering how OLED iPads have been rumored for a long time, hopefully they will arrive in early 2024 when the previous models start to age. A replacement for the M1 iPad Air is also expected to arrive, but we don’t know when or what chip it will run.
Gurman said early development has begun on AirPods Pro 3, a new Apple TV with advanced features, and new home devices like smart displays.
But what about the Vision Pro 2?
Despite the work that needs to be done on the Vision Pro, work on the second generation is still underway according to Gurman. However, the information is very limited, and at the moment there is not much to say on the subject.
The second-generation headset is expected to come with features that Gurman previously said would be available on the Vision Pro. These include the ability to view multiple desktop screens on a Mac at the same time, exercise as part of Fitness Plus, and the ability for multiple users to use digital Personas during FaceTime meetings.
It was previously rumored that the second Vision Pro headset might come with a lower price tag, making it more accessible. While we hope that’s the case, I can only imagine a time when Apple releases two new headphones – one cheaper and one more affordable with the latest and greatest technology. A true Vision Pro 2, alongside the Vision SE, if you will.
According to Gurman, the second generation Vision Pro won’t arrive until 2025 at the earliest. But as they say, there seems to be no shortage of things for people to enjoy in the short term.
Just be warned that plans are subject to change, so all items may not be as described. Gurman usually has a good reputation for insider information, but he doesn’t rule out Apple changing its plans in the coming months. But hopefully as the launch of these products inch closer, further leaks and rumors will reveal more that either agree or contradict what we know so far.
